| Students in the junior high start the day in their homeroom with pledges, Bible reading and prayer. Each day has six periods, a morning break and lunch. Each period is fifty-two minutes long. After the first two periods, there is a twenty minute morning break. Students usually talk and get something to eat. This is followed by two more periods before the thirty minute lunch. Students may bring their lunch or support different organizations at the school by buying pizza, nachos, and chicken nuggets on different days. After lunch there are two more periods. A typical day has Bible, English, history, math, science, and French classes. English includes grammar, spelling, and literature. History may be US History, World History, or Pennsylvania History. Math may be Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1. Junior high science is Earth Science and Life Science. Bible class includes learning about Old and New Testament characters and Bible memorization. Computer instruction and chapel are usually held once a week. Classes are rigorous and homework is to be expected each night. At the end of each year, there is an awards ceremony recognizing those who have been on the honor roll, maintained perfect demerit records, and kept perfect attendance. There is much more to Mount Carmel than classwork and homework. The active sports program has volleyball, basketball and track for girls and soccer, basketball and track for guys. Students participate in major programs for Veterans Day and Christmas. There is at least one major field trip each year. These trips have been to Washington, DC and the Antietam Battlefield the past two years. There are two parties a year at Christmas and Valentine’s Day and usually some bowling excursions. In the fall, there is a spiritual emphasis week which has special chapel times and special times of fun for the students. In the winter, there is spirit week when students show school spirit by participating in different fun activities. |
