Welcome to the first and second grade page at Mt. Carmel Christian School. We have a very busy and exciting classroom and would like to share some of our activities with you. We start each day with pledges and prayer, and then have Bible time. The children love learning new songs and hearing Bible stories. They learn Scripture verses, and they also learn to use their Bibles. The students learn to say the books of the Old and New Testaments, and by second grade are able to find verses in the Bible. Sword Drills become very exciting then. One of the things I try to do in my class is instill a love for reading in the children. The first step in this process is teaching them to read, so reading can be enjoyable. We build on what they have learned in Kindergarten by using a strong phonics-based reading program that makes learning to read exciting for the children. We have a phonics and reading time each day. I also expose them to a variety of books, so they know there are books about things in which they are interested. We have a wonderful school library in addition to our classroom library to make good books available to the students. One of our favorite times of the day is math class. We use so many different activities, drills, and games that the children hardly know they are learning. The first graders learn place value, counting, addition and subtraction facts, adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, measurements, counting money, and telling time. The second graders continue to work on these skills and go on to learn some multiplication and division, renaming in addition and subtraction problems, story problems, and math reasoning skills. We also have spelling, handwriting, science, history, and art. Our days are very busy, but the wide variety of activities and hands-on learning make the time go quickly. Of course, recess is a favorite time of the day for children at Mt. Carmel. We have a wonderful gym for cold and rainy days, and the Lord has provided us a beautiful, modern playground for sunny days. The children can order hot lunches each day, or bring their own lunch to school. I plan some special days of learning each year for the children built around various themes. In the past, we have studied different countries, spiders, presidents, Indians, penguins, and other topics. These are always especially exciting days for the children. This year we built an igloo from milk cartons that fits several children inside. It became a special reading nook where the children could curl up with a good book. I have been teaching school for over 30 years and enjoy each new class that comes my way. God has made every child special, and I realize that teaching children is a privilege, as well as a tremendous responsibility. It is when the school and the home work together that we achieve success in education.
